Description: Product Description
Every city contains secret places. Moscow in the tumultuous 1990s is no different, its citizens seeking safety in a world below the streets - a dark, cavernous world of magic, weeping trees, and albino jackdaws, where exiled pagan deities and faerytale creatures whisper strange tales to those who would listen. Galina is a young woman caught, like her contemporaries, in the seeming lawlessness of the new Russia. In the midst of this chaos, her sister Maria turns into a jackdaw and flies away - prompting Galina to join Yakov, a policeman investigating a rash of recent disappearances. Their search will take them to the underground realm of hidden truths and archetypes, to find themselves caught between reality and myth, past and present, honor and betrayal . . . the secret history of Moscow.
Reviews: mb (USA: MI) (2009/06/02):
I picked this book up because of it's cover. Cliche, I know. It is hard to resist covers that look like threadless t-shirts, but I digress.

Also, the cover has an endorsement by Neil Gaiman (awesome). Once I started reading this book, I realized I was in for a treat. This author offers many a keen description about the city (Moscow) and it's inhabitant's (above and below ground). The underground offers a whole other city/fantasy land type place. However, this fantasy land, though endowed with many a mystical creature, does not offer smiles and kittens and such. However, it does have a smashing pub, important things first. An intriguing story, good for fantasy fans, fans of Russian/Asiatic history, and of course, Russian politics (a sort of undercurrent theme, unsuprisingly).
