Amazon.com Review
Known for their eye-catching design and generous use of color photos, DK Eyewitness guides are practically spilling over with all sorts of useful information for the traveler, and the cruise version is no different. The DK Eyewitness Guides Cruise Guide to Europe & the Mediterranean covers 23 countries and their sun-drenched ports of call. The guide is broken down into four sections including a chapter on the origins of cruise travel (from Cunard's Queen Elizabeth in the 1930s to the megaships of today) followed by a lengthy chapter on ports of call that describes in detail the dozens of Mediterranean ports catering to cruise ships. Not surprisingly, Italy, France, and the Greek Islands (with fabled resorts like Capri, St. Tropez, and Santorini) warrant the most space while lesser-known ports such as Amsterdam's The Hague, Malta's Valletta, and Croatia's Dubrovnik register just a few pages. North Africa and portions of the Middle East (Jerusalem, Beirut) are also covered. The Cruise Guide provides the nuts and bolt of cruising--everything from getting a cabin upgrade to avoiding motion sickness. The final chapter, a "Directory of Cruise Lines," lists more than 30 lines including Cunard, Royal Caribbean, Holland America, and Silversea. --Jill Fergus
