Reviews: DavidOlson (3 for 2) (USA: WI) (2008/10/27):
I have to recommend this book quite highly, though it probably isn't what you expect. The characters speak in a Jane Austen style, which is quite unique for a fantasy book. Even stranger, at the beginning of the book, there is no magic, but only people who study the history of magic. The plot is rambling, which can be seen as good and bad. If you want somethingwith a clearly focused plot that gets to the point and has no excess baggage, this book is not for you. Instead this huge book has many footnotes, yes footnotes, and is written as if it had really happened and that some historian were chronicling the events. Of course, like most historians, he has a hard time staying to the point and has lots of asides. And, because it is told liek a history, there are events that happen that don't advance the main plot, such as the war against Napoleon. The excess doesn't feel boring however, as it never loses its wit.
