Author John Kaufeld assumes little more than readers' elementary familiarity with their operating systems--how to start programs and the like. From that base, he explains how to install the AOL software (he covers AOL 4.0) and get connected for the first time. Then he guides you through the social and informational resources on AOL and the Internet, showing you how to search for information, participate in chats, locate items for sale, and play games. Readers find out how to behave politely online and protect themselves from electronic nebbishes too. America Online for Dummies focuses almost exclusively on AOL software for Windows--there's little mention of the Macintosh here, which is unfortunate for those getting online for the first time with AOL and an iMac.
