One of science fiction's classic themes is the alternate history story. But history includes scientific discoveries as well as the acts of individuals or nations. What if breakthroughs such as lasers or genetics had taken place earlier? What if understandings such as domestication or the structure of the solar system hadn't happened yet? What if Sumerians invented the printing press, or America outlawed the Internet?
