Reviews: Marianne (Australia) (2013/02/12):
Explosive Eighteen is the eighteenth full-length novel in the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. Stephanie has returned from her vacation in Hawaii with a tan line on her ring finger, a photo of an unknown man in her purse and a bunch of skips to clear. She’s not telling about the tan line, doesn’t know about the photo, although the owner has turned up dead, and desperately needs to bring in some skips to pay the rent. And the two men in her life are both sporting bruises. The bail bonds office is still working from a bus while the new office is under construction. The FTA’s are never straight-forward, and at the bottom of the list is Stephanie’s arch-enemy, Joyce Barnhardt. Lula switches to Ranger mode clothing– all black- but Ranger’s usual diet? Not so much…….. Before long, everyone is after the mystery photo: fake FBI, real FBI, an armed foreigner and somebody’s fiancée. This instalment has only one funeral home viewing, only one vehicular firebombing (although a warehouse suffers that fate), and Stephanie borrows no cars from Ranger though she does come up with a novel solution to prevent her car being stolen a fifth time. This book has rats, pot roast, computer hackers, diamond smugglers, love potions and hair highlights. Stephanie uses Lula and a pizza as FTA bait and discovers Joyce Barnhardt squatting in her apartment. Memorable quotes: “I wasn’t talking about food,” I said to Lula. “You can’t solve all your problems with food.” “Since when?” and “I didn’t eats a whole dozen,” Lula said. “There’s two left in the box. And I wouldn’t have eaten so many if they weren’t all different. I hate when I miss a culinary experience.” Weapons this time: knives, guns, stun guns and a rocket launcher. Fans will enjoy revisiting the familiar characters, although it seems like time this series came to a close, as much of the action and dialogue is getting repetitive. There may be very little depth to Stephanie Plum, but there are still quite a few laughs.
