safrolistics (United Kingdom) (2007/07/04): I don't know whether this really is the 'confessional' book that it is marketed as, but it's not the witty, funny, Bridget-Jones-a-like that it's been made out to be. It's actually quite disturbing beneath the matter of fact surface, both for the ease with which an intelligent graduate could accept a 'career' as a prostitute, and the aura of violence beneath the narrative. 'Belle' details her violent relationship with one of her ex-lovers in between her diary of her professional appointments, and gives us a window into a soul who actively seeks out an abusive sexual relationship and finds it satisfying. Whether this is part of a trend of women detailing the link between sexuality and abuse, I don't know, but somehow the easy almost flippant tone of the book serves to highlight the disturbed depths that it almost conceals.
