Review:
Arriving just in time for summer, this collection of short stories is perfect for those of us who can only snatch their moments of leisure in bite-size chunks and, like a chocolate selection box, it offers us hard- and soft-centres as well as quite a few chewy ones. Romance, humour, mystery and horror are all represented and so, no matter what your mood, this book can be dipped into and enjoyed. The book is a charity fundraiser and #1 for every copy sold will be donated to PiggyBankKids which raises funds for children and young people in need. 24 favourite writers have each contributed a piece, including Joanna Trollope, Jilly Cooper, Marika Cobbold, Arabella Weir, Penny Vincenzi, Howard Jacobson and Malcolm Pryce. All are skilled at distilling the essence of an idea into an intense short story so that most of the ones in this book reach out and grab your attention. Some have a twist in the tale, some just linger in the memory and call the reader back to enjoy them again. The ideas and issues revealed through the stories will appeal to a wide age group: the angst felt by an adolescent boy who feels he is not wanted, the unexpected friendship between a ten-year-old boy and an elderly man, the joyful hope of new love for a grieving widower, the betrayal of a mother by greedy and manipulative children, the compassion and mutual respect between an lonely old lady and a visiting teenage girl, the bizarre, the cruel, the horror of neglect.... it's all right here, and despite its title, this book is well worth keeping on your bookshelves to savour throughout the seasons.
