Astrid Keller spends her early life sheltered by her academic achievements and immersed in her studies of physics. The daughter of a dysfunctional German-Swedish liaison, the gorgeous young lady pays little attention to appearance and none to boys. World War II sends her from Berlin to Stockholm where she completes her studies and is ensnared by her disturbed professor, Erich Kialt. Astrid becomes his assistant and soon his wife in a marriage that is doomed.

The physicist couple are joined by a third scientist in a quixotic quest to develop an atomic bomb, or at least the blueprint for one. Each participant is driven for different reasons, but their end goal is the same. The private and seemingly secret project doesn't remain so as their own carelessness gives matters away to an unlikely spy, the restauranteur, Mr. Ho. The Chinese Nationalists, fearful of the mainland and unsure of their ability to withstand pressure, are seeking weapons of self-protection. The accidental discovery of the Swedish team and its project eventually leads to a sale of the bomb's blueprint.

Astrid, through bizarre circumstance, is the surviving member of the team. She sells the Taiwan Chinese the secrets developed in Sweden. The handsome woman pays a price as she lives with the fear that she sold herself. Delivery of the prize is in person and that experience starts a physical and mental shift which creates someone far different. The story follows Astrid's eager adventures with men and a new lifestyle. The question to be answered is can she get off the island of Taiwan?
