Michelle (Australia) (2010/06/19): From the back cover: Mary Collins was a really beautiful baby. Born premature, she had a tiny oval face, a rosebud mouth, and an enchanting smile. The third child of parents who moved from the bustle of New York to make a home in Ireland, Mary found a warm & secure place in the heart of the family. Then eight months later, Patricia Collins was told that Mary was brain damaged. Doctors diagnosed Cerebral Palsy; she would probably never walk & almost cetainly be retarded. The shock of this discovery plunged Patricia into despair. Mary needed extensive therapy & the burden of caring for her increased Patricia's resentment & guilt - she began to drink heavily, blaming herself for what had happened. When circumstances forced the Collins family to to return to America, Patricia made a wrenching decision to leave Mary behind in Ireland in a residential home for 2 years. The years in Ireland did nothing to lessen the severity of Mary's disabilities, but it was the catalyst for something greater. Mary was becoming a determined, courageous child with a winning personailty and she gave a very special purpose and meaning to life. This is an intimate, inspiring and deeply moving account of a mother's journey from despair to joy, and of the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity through love and understanding.
