Dorfman's novel, a recent addition to the growing corpus of Chilean exile literature, relates the futuristic exploits of a politically asphyxiated dictatorship. By meshing disparate elements (the propagandistic functions of comic strips, archeological pseudo-scholarship, the mythic satire of fetal rebellion as children refuse to be born into the world as it is), Dorfman has created a ponderous, provocative, if somewhat abstruse and wearisome experimental narrative that, despite its finely wrought translation, will reward persistent readers only.
