valeriem (USA: MA) (2011/08/03): Description: Colonial Women were equal partners in the creation of a new world. Revolutionary Women fought vigorously for the patriot cause. Black Women refused to let their spirits die in the face of centuries of oppression. The Early Feminists first fought for abolition and then demanded the vote for themselves. The First Factory Women, imprisoned by the power loom and the spinning jenny in small town mills, took to the streets to demand fair wages. Maverick Women drove wagons, rode horses, fought prairie fires and walked day after day westward across the country toward an unknown future. Immigrant Women, in crowded tenements, struggled to make a new life in a foreign country. Modern Women won the right to vote and with every decade gained a larger role int he world outside the home. These women, and many more, come alive in A History of Women in America.
