Debi Cates (USA: TX) (2009/04/06): From dust jacket flaps: In the summer of 1947, an Arab shepherd stumbled upon one of the most astonishing finds in the field of biblical archaeology -- the discovery of seven ancient scrolls in a cave near the Dead Sea. The document sent waves of excitement throughout the scholarly religious world, as they were found to be manuscripts from the book of Isaiah, older by approximately a thousand years than any previously known Hebrew copy of the Old Testament. In addition, they were proved to have been part of the library of a Jewish monastic community in existence before and during the time of Christ.Hundreds of more scroll fragments were later unearthed and provided a heretofore undreamed of insight into Jewish sectarianism of this period. It has now become clear that many of the characteristic ideas of Jewish Christianity were cradled in such a religious environment. Since THE MYSTERY OF THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS REVEALED (formerly titled THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS) was first published in 1956, the discoveries have been reappraised and their importance for New Testament studies emphasized in the light of the very latest trends. Also contained in this newly revised edition are a detailed account of the excavations at Qumran, Murabba'at, and other sites: a discussion of the doctrine, daily life, and discipline of the Qumran sect; and previously unpublished texts concerning the Essenes. Of special value to the reader are the bibliography and biblical index, and the full set of completely new plates illustrating the discoveries and the arduous step-by-step restoration of the scroll fragments. Perhaps most stimulating to the reader is the author's discussion of the possibility of future finds. John Allegro is well qualified to present this fascinating field of research, both as an expert linguist and as trustee and secretary of the Dead Sea Scrolls Fund, a charitable organization dedicated to the finding, preservation, and publication of the scrolls.
