8910 (United Kingdom) (2007/09/21): An early and very competent attempt to catalogue the history of all swords, and the cultural antecedents surrounding their use, in all the world and from the earliest known times. From wooden swords studded with teeth or obsidian, up to Western sabres, Indian tulwars, African swords (a rare subject area) and Japanese katanas. The personality of the intrepid explorer Sir Richard Burton, and his deep respect for the traditions surrounding the subject matter, shine through the pages of this treatise. Excellent, scholarly drawings and descriptions, and well-qualified observations and conjectures concerning the use of various types of sword.
