Nuclear fusion is considered to have great potential for supplying long term energy demands. The aim of this book is to consider the technological, ecological and economic questions related to the commercial development of fusion plasmas as an energy source. The authors have examined these questions in the light of current developments of specific sources without assuming that any particular source will necessarily be used commercially. Aspects which cannot be considered without reference to a specific source have been related to the tokamak reactor with deuterium-tritium plasma since this reactor is currently one of the most advanced in terms of development. Individual chapters consider the basic principles of fusion reactions and the requirements for utilizing this power for energy production, the main components of a tokamak reactor and the economic and energy parameters concerned with the development of such a reactor for commercial use. Obviously these concepts cannot be discussed without considering safety implications and these are assessed in Chapter 4. Potential fuels are compared in the subsequent chapter and the book concludes with an assessment of the development and future and nuclear fusion as an energy source. The authors have drawn on their combined practical and technical experience to provide a complete picture of the current state of play in the nuclear fusion field. Their analysis provides a complete description of the parameters involved in assessing and comparing nuclear fusion as an alternative to the more conventional forms of energy production.
