I generally love Katie MacAlister’s books. I loved the premise of this book, the characters , and the romance. However, I didn’t love this book. I thoroughly did not enjoy it at all. And I was forewarned but it was in my TBR pile and I picked it up and tried it anyway. I didn’t like how it was told from first person POV, first from Jack and then from Octavia. I was constantly going back to the chapter’s beginning to figure out who was speaking. Very jarring. I never for a minute got lost in the story and forgot I was reading a book, which for me is the whole pleasure of reading. The secondary characters were just blah. True this was the first Steam-punk I’d read but I was really looking forward to this new genre. It didn’t completely turn me against this genre but definitely has me backing away from it.

I love Katie MacAlister's books, but really didn't like this one at all. I'm not bothered by her usual vampires, dragons, time travel and other supernatural stuff, but this steampunk was just weird and convoluted. There were some of Katies trademark "laugh out loud funny" scenes, but it literally took me months of picking this up and putting it down again to get through it. I usually finish her books in about 2 days (and I'm a busy mom to 4.) If you're a fan of Katie's, you'll probably get this anyway, but consider yourself warned. :)
