Marianne (Australia) (2012/11/26): Lover Unbound is the fifth novel in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R.Ward and tells the story of Vishous and surgeon Dr Jane Whitcomb. While killing a lesser, V is stabbed, then shot in the chest, and ends up in a hospital under the care of Jane Whitcomb. Jane is fascinated by his 6-chambered heart, but V is more fascinated by Jane, and when the Brothers come to take him home, V insists Jane comes along. Through a series of flashbacks, we learn of V’s father, his life before the Brotherhood and the reason for his sexual preferences. The stories of John Matthew and Phury also continue, and we learn more about the Scribe Virgin (apparently a misnomer), the Chosen and the Primale’s duties. I loved the parallels with other virgins and saviours of the race. Not a lot of lesser action this instalment. The plot has a great twist at the end, and I love that Ward is not afraid to kill off a character here and there. These stories are imaginative and the characters are appealing. I can’t wait to read about Phury and see how he carries out his duty in Lover Enshrined.
