Product Description
A dark awakening . . . When her parents give her a gloomy old dollhouse for her birthday instead of the ten speed bike she's expecting, Vicky is disappointed. But she soon becomes fascinated by the small shadowy world and its inhabitants. The hours she spends playing with the dolls is a good way to escape from her parents's arguments. As Vicky's life becomes more troubled, she starts to take out her frustration on the dolls, making their lives as unhappy as hers. Then one day, Vicky wakes up inside the dollhouse, trapped among the monsters she's created. Bewildered, Vicky is sure she's dreaming. Can she find her way out of this nightmare world?

Ruth Bygrave (United Kingdom) (2008/10/21): The only nasty surprise with this book is how short it is. It's about one-third the length of a normal William Sleator novel. It's not too short to develop a creepy atmosphere, though. The illos are excellent, and the details of how unsettling doll 'life' is to an outside observer are excellently done. Sleator has taken the effort to imagine how repulsive the dolls would seem to a girl become the same size as them -- the books she has given them seem like dirty cardboard, and the 'father doll' constructed out of a blurred cotton face and pipe-cleaner limbs looks fairly horrific when it's six foot tall. The story doesn't make it absolutely clear whether the unpleasantness is from the girl or the dolls (although it's very clear that something is affecting her family), but my reading is that Vicky's disappointment and frustration in getting a grotty old doll's house makes her spiritually vulnerable, and something rather nasty gets in.
