This Newbery Award Winning Classic is a favorite of many of my friends who read it when they were younger. Although the book is geared toward young adults, it was a good read even for me (an old person). The Saturday review said: "It has the general appearance of being science fiction, but it is not...There is mystery, mysticism, a feeling of indefinable, brooding horror...The pervading theme is love...One feels that this book quests desperately for something it never touches. It is original, different, exciting."Shortly after receiving this classic, the author, Madeleine L'Engle passed away. I am glad I finally had the opportunity to get to know who she was through this wonderful book.

This is the sort of book I wish that I'd found more of when I was in the 8-12 age range. It's clearly a children's story but is never patronizing. The two leads are multi-faceted and intelligent and the author doesn't try to 'dumb down' the story for kids. She explains the physics of hypothetical time travel well rather than going "oooh, magic!" It's a very sweet book about a family trying to reunite despite the Evil that's trying to take over the universe. There's a lot of scripture in there as it's a clearly Christian book but the message is given more in terms of dark wins only when there's no light left. Anything more I say would be a horrifying spoiler, it's a sweet and sometimes frightening story with one of the best teenaged girl heroines out there.
