Fun, quick read with a little bit of romance (a couple of dates and a few kisses). The main character, Dyce, is down to earth, a financially strapped, divorced mother of a toddler who refinishes furniture for a living. The other main character is Ben, her best friend of 17 years who happens to be gay. The mystery revolves around her furniture refinishing business after she finds a gelatinous corpse who appears to have gone through bath in a lye vat (used at larger refinishing businesses). Things happen to Ben (gay drama) and Ben and Dyce spend the next few days as other scary things happen to Dyce which she discounts. Enters the handsome detective and you have the romantic spin. Easy book to read, Characters captivated me enough to want to finish the book in a couple of settings. Look forward to reading the next in the series.

Interesting writing, good characters, but the heroine is TDTL (too dumb to live). What kind of nutcase ignores threats to her well-being, especially with a kid in the house, or forges ahead with questioning people when the police specifically say not to, especially when she is the single mom of a toddler? Her first act, not turning over a table with a possible clue scribbled on the underside, is never treated as an obstruction of an investigation, a possible felony. Still, I learned a lot about refinishing furniture.
