I love this book. I grew up one county over from Chase County, Kansas, and have been in many of the places described. In fact, I picked up the book, found a chapter title "Wonsevu," and was sold then and there--only someone who has actually been in the little hamlet of Wonsevu in the Flint Hills could ever have come up with the title.The book is an exploration of Chase County, systematic (in its approach to the grid) but very intuitive in its willingness to hear miles of stories. Again and again I would have some memory sparked, only to turn the page and find that exact memory picked up by Least Heat-Moon and savored. This is an outsider who approaches the land and the inhabitants with a great deal of love. There is also a sense of foreboding as he sees the actions of other outsiders, who have no particular love for the land or people, looming over and making decisions that will affect both for decades to come.
