this is non-fiction and the book review above focuses more on Caravaggio but I found it to be much more about the people searching for the painting and those who worked on it and happened to be involved with it and that stuff is fascinating! Tracing the path of the painting over centuries, it weaves in the lives of Italian art graduate students and the restorers who labor in obscurity in small museums and feuds between scholarly art critics along with the history of once monied Italian and English aristocratic families.
