Rita (USA: CA) (2007/07/30): Such an inspiring story! That a child can see so much death and violence and still survive is truly an amazing story. It has made such an impression on me that I think I will never forget it. It's such an emotional story; you feel outrage and sadness for what is happening to these children; for the lives and families they have lost; for their suffering; this story has a happy ending, but you wonder about all the others.
stefanin (USA: GA) (2007/10/20): This is a truly inspiring book, but it takes a strong stomach to take in all the violence Beah writes about. It's nonstop and incredibly disturbing It's difficult to believe this happened to anyone, let alone children...
hannah marx (USA: AK) (2007/12/07): This was a quick read, but terribly sad. It sucks you into the life of the character and won't let go of you until you feel his pain and sigh with relief when he comes up for air. Such a good book.
JessicaGreen (USA: VA) (2008/06/04): This is an important book. It teaches compassion, forgiveness, and redemption. It is important enough to purchase your own copy and buy copies for your friends. I've given several copies away as gifts. I asked the Barnes & Noble associate who rang up my last copy if he'd read it yet. He said he hadn't but that a man had bought a copy the day before. He'd started reading it in the store, couldn't put it down, and had tears in his eyes when he bought it. I don't mean to sound maudlin, but it really is a very important story and one of our time.
