Hook, Line and Murder is not just a murder mystery. It's also a romance story, and a poignantly amusing look at fly fishing. In fact, the hero falls in love with the woman who teaches him to cast. So the romantic parts are sexy rather than mushy, and the fly fishing parts are entertaining rather than technical. Hook, Line and Murder is also about morality. The hero faces some hard questions, because the ethics of the situation are not black and white. My favorite review so far compared the book's central issues to "the hard-boiled moral choices faced by Dashiell Hammett's characters." I also liked the review that called the ending "stunningly different."
