From Library Journal
A better title for this sensitive, humorous novel might have been "Growing Up" or "Learning To Cope." This is the story of 13-year-old Max Darrigan and how he comes to terms with a father who leaves him, first emotionally and then physically. When his father's aberrant behavior forces Max to move in with his Uncle Jack and Aunt Gertrude, he meets best friend Martin, the smooth-talking con man; Max's strange sister Marcie and brother Stu, the classic bully; and Deado, Small, and the other transients he and Martin befriend at the Y. This odd cast of characters is likable and memorable, as Monninger treats each with a certain understanding. They all have something to teach Max, and his quest for understanding, friendship, and love as he tries to manage the usual traumas of adolescence makes delightful reading. Recommended. Susan Avallone, "Library Journal"
