Craig (United Kingdom) (2015/04/11): This is a real hotch potch of a book; the first part is autobiographical reaching all the way back to the authors childhood, which I hadn't really expected, but it sets the scene for the book; where the author discusses his context (ie. a South African childhood), it is informative and surprising; where he recalls details such as lost loves and early sexual conquests, it's less entertaining, and not what I expected to find in the story of "a war surgeons education". In setting the scene for his experiences, the political detail and background can be quite exhaustive, but the experiences and adventures described make for compelling reading.
