Breann (USA: WA) (2008/03/21): I took a break from my classic novels list to read this. It was an enjoyable read, but having just finished Gulliver's Travels and Pride and Prejudice, it really felt like a no-brainer modern novel (it has since become an Oprah book, after all). Don't get me wrong! It was a welcome break - it was like watching a movie. Despite having over 1000 pages, I finished it quickly. While I'm no expert, I did feel that the first half of the book was superior to second. I understand Follett took several years break before finishing Pillars, but it shouldn't be that evident. The second half really lacked the character intimacy and detail of the first. I would recommend it to those who would like an easy, enjoyable read in historical fiction.
