Reviews: Shrimpy (USA: NH) (2007/12/16):
Very different from the Twilight series, but I found myself caring more about Melanie and Wanda than I did about Bella and Edward (which is REALLY saying something). The Host is a great science fiction novel with some really interesting morality themes, with a twist, and Meyer is known to do. Don't miss it!

Emma (Australia) (2008/06/17):
Not necessarily THE best book I've ever read, but certainly up there on my favourites list, and it's definitely the most satisfying, and the most well-paced (every time you think you might want to stop reading, something happens which absolutely compels you to continue on for another few chapters). A fantastic read which cleverly balances elements of sci-fi, adventure, romance, and a bit of action, all the while prompting you to reflect upon the human condition.

Jennifer (USA: LA) (2008/10/29):
DO NOT read this book simply because it is written by the same author as Twilight. If you do not like science fiction - don't read it. I absolutely love the Twilight series - this book I hated. Melanie/Wanda bugged me to the point of wanting to jump into the pages and wrap my fingers around her throat... and I just couldn't get into the possibility of the plot line. The only reason I read the entire book is because you have to finish what you start.

Regina (USA: OR) (2008/12/07):
An amazing, well-told story. I didn't know what to expect but this book was hard to put down. A fascinating plot with characters I easily connected with. Loved the ending. Don't miss this one!

becksterxx (Canada) (2008/12/31):
The Host was a very well written book, I found it slow at the starting but suddenly jumped into an exciting story that you want to keep reading. You get to love the characters and you do not know what to expect each chapter. I reccommmend this book highly.

Rosalinda (USA: OR) (2009/03/01):
Firstly, I have to comment on how surprised I am at Meyer’s writing in this book. I think she’s grown and improved immeasurably from the Twilight Series.

I liked the idea and I think she is very good at creating a world for her stories (or worlds in this case =P). I like how she conceived how the souls and the humans lived.. The whole premise was very, very good.

Characters, also very good. And the emotion and conflict was well done. I even found myself tearing up a few times (rare for me).

HOWEVER.. To me, it all felt a tiny bit wasted. I was waiting for something big and exciting to happen and it felt like nothing really did.

This book made me realize something about Meyer as an author. She really focuses on the drama (the angst?) and the characters. She makes wonderful, loveable characters and it seems like even she can’t bear but to have everything end up perfectly tidy and happy for them in the end. It’s almost like she’s afraid of hurting them. (Oh, and if you were annoyed with how obnoxiously selfless Bella was supposed to be, you'll want to pull your hair out in frustration over Wanda)

As a reader, I think it’s important to have the good emotions and interesting characters, but then I want them to DO something exciting. I like the action and adventure, and Meyer doesn’t give me enough of that. At the end of The Host, I felt like I just got done reading a romance novel, when I was hoping for a sci fi adventure.

I felt this way about the Twilight Series, too and it’s probably why I liked Eclipse the most, because there was that big exciting finale.

So, now that I’ve bored you all with a too-long ramble, I’ll conclude. I liked the book a lot, but I wanted a bit more action.

its one of my favorite books i loved it! i think that if you like the twilight series you'll like this. also u dont have to like sci fi because this isnt really like that. its romantic and there is fantasy. i loved it.

Morgan (USA: NY) (2009/07/26):
In my opinion, this book was not good. Without giving away the details, I'd just say that Wanda is the perfect character. Perfect characters bug the hell out of me. She gets hurt, decides it's all good as long as she's with her lover, allows them to give her dirty looks, is determined to save everyone. Really? She couldn't be selfish or a little envious or.. anything? It was too set up. It didn't have any flavor!

Amanda (USA: NY) (2009/10/24):
I really enjoyed this book, after reading some of the authors other books I was expecting a certain style of writing and type of book. But I must say I was really surprised I loved it.

Lisa (USA: MI) (2009/11/12):
never finished it. not stephenie meyers best work in my opinion.

Marianne (Australia) (2011/02/27):
Stephenie Meyer’s (so far) stand-alone novel, The Host, departs from her popular Twilight series and explores the theme of bodily possession of humankind by alien souls. As we follow the soul of Wanderer, who is implanted into the body of her host, Melanie Stryder, we gradually learn the history of this alien species and how their possession works. The spanner in the works for Wanderer comes when she realises that Melanie’s soul has not given up the body, and that they inhabit the body together. Having at first dutifully reported this to her supervisor/advisor, a Seeker, she begins, eventually, to have sympathy with her host and manages to escape. The real fun begins when she manages to track down a colony of humans who have so far escaped possession, including Melanie’s younger brother Jamie and her (pre-possession) lover, Jared. This is a thick book to read, but Meyer keeps the reader’s interest easily. The situation where Wanderer’s (Wanda’s) soul and Melanie’s soul, both inhabiting the same body, have fallen in love with two different men, creates an especially delicious dilemma. This was a great read, and, with the Twilight series complete, let us hope Meyer turns her talent to more like this one. There are rumours of sequels in the pipeline called The Soul and The Seeker.

Terrible author, and I'm not trolling. I've read all her books to see what the hype was about (even this new one!) The Host - tries hard to seem like a apocalyptic sci-fi romance novel, succeeds only in satisfying "true fans." Plot unoriginal. Terrible ending. Cool cover, though.

Margo (USA: TX) (2011/06/04):
This is an excellent contribution to the world of adult science-fiction and well worth reading, particularly if young vampire love is not to your taste. Give Stephenie Meyer a chance, this book is much better written than her others and very interesting.

Qui2 (USA: NY) (2013/02/12):
I really didn't want to like this book, but I really did!
