Reviews: Ellie (USA: OK) (2007/03/29):
This historical fantasy is the first of a series that defines the time of Joan of Arc and infamous Giles de Rais, plus Yann, seer and milk brother of Giles. Against the backdrop of war in France , there is an undercurrent of magic, paganism, corruption and evil that was fostered in the Catholic Church. La Pucelle, as Joan is called, is the virgin warrioress in the prophecy who would lead France to victory against Britain. Contrary to common historical belief, she hears the voice of the Goddess who assists her. Keep in mind, this is a historical fantasy with a heavy pagan leaning, so it is awash in magic that can at times be evil, and other times benevolent. The descriptions of the countryside and the heat of battle are vivid. Chamberlain narrates the story with an accuracy in which you can feel the heartbeat of Mother France in the souls of the people who populate this book.
