I was very impressed by this: I enjoyed the clash of cultures and the central theme of language and misunderstanding. The writing is exquisite at times particularly in description of the noise and teeming crowds in Shanghai - you really do get a sense of place and time. I thought the characters were psychologically interesting and while I was abit disappointed with the ending, I thought this was a very interesting debut book that was well worth reading.
