I cannot recommend this book highly enough! It documents a key, much neglected, event in the history of Britain: Jamaican immigration, during and just after the Second World War. It's an emotional, deeply humane tale, told through the voices of four characters caught up in a rapidly changing world. Each responds in his or her way as best they can to their extraordinary, life-changing, yet commonplace situations. The result is funny, occasionally heart-rending, often beautiful.
