Gray wrote several children's plays and then rewrote them as novels. This is one of the most typically poignant and funny. He knew how to evoke the "tingle" factor very well. The love/hate abusive relationship between Tomlyn the Witch's cat and Marshall the raven is one of the comic elements in a retelling of the fairy story of Rapunzel which is really about Love and Evil, with tragedy never far away.
