If you have a 3rd or 4th grader who's developing a sense of comic irony, the Hank the Cowdog series is right up your child's alley! The characterizations are deft and the writing witty enough to make even jaded parents chuckle heartily. The author has recorded audio versions of each of his books and you owe yourself and your child at least one of those, too (I recommend any of the first three vols on audio cassette or CD), because Erickson reads them with comic verve and a Texas twang, distinguishing the characters' voices from one another, and making it easy even for younger children to grasp the sometimes ironic humor: Hank doesn't realize he's just a dog -- he considers himself to be the "head of security" for the ranch on which he and several other dogs live, as well as smarter than he really is. When my kids were ages 6-12 our family never took a long car trip without also taking all the Hank the Cowdog tapes with us, as well as the books for the younger children to read along. Very few children's story tapes are as enjoyable for parents to listen to for an hour or more at a time, or as enjoyable to read aloud.
