Reviews: Hope (United Kingdom) (2007/08/22):
I read "Safe House" first, and that was really excellent. Then I read "Killing Me Softly", and overall that was fine, though there were points when I wanted to stop reading. With this book though I am left with an overall sense of irritation and disappointment, and I am not really sure why - possibly it is a problem of reading order? Both of the main characters struck me as pretty irritating - which is odd, because in the other two books mentioned, Nicci French manages to get the reader and the main character on the same side, the apparently conspiring characters on the opposing side, and keep the reader going with a story that has plenty of twists and tension, in an effort to find out who will survive unscathed, and whether any sort of justice will be dispensed. I don't think the story can have been as engrossing for me as the other two books though, because I found myself (for once) skipping pages. The drama in this book seems to be on a smaller scale, and the characters do not seem quite as enigmatic as those in the aforementioned books. Nicci French still manages to be a reasonably good observer of people though - there are little moments of recognition for particular tones or phrases or mannerisms or behaviours or social roles - even if that observation is scattered amongst the characters.
