Philbrick not only provides a riveting account of shipwreck & survival, but also an interesting history of nineteenth-century beliefs & values; especially inside the close-knit Nantucket community that depending on the whaling industry for its livelihood. It is a well-researched masterpiece, making use of comparison with other similar disasters, theories of anthropology, & physiological studies, while still being able to capture the reader's attention.
It is no wonder that although this is a fairly recent book, it has been used as a reference for all other survival books written since.
