Marianne (Australia) (2014/06/15): Manly Girls is a memoir by Dutch-born Australian journalist, Elisabeth Wynhausen. In it she recounts her early life as an immigrant living in Manly, her schooling and University days, her short bout of teaching and her career in journalism, finishing in Manhattan. While there are some humorous anecdotes, there is heavy emphasis on the family’s Jewishness, which tends to limit the book’s interest. Certainly, this memoir will appeal to Dutch-born Jewish immigrants to Australia who grew up in Manly in the fifties and sixties and also to those who were part of the Sydney “Push” in the late sixties. For the rest of us, there is little to redeem this: it is a chore to finish.
