Description: Product Description
Now a major TV series starring Martin Clunes, Arsher Ali and Art MalikFrom the winner of the Man Booker Prize for Fiction 2011, an extraordinary true-life tale about a long-forgotten mystery... Arthur and George grow up worlds apart in late nineteenth-century Britain: Arthur in shabby-genteel Edinburgh, George in the vicarage of a small Staffordshire village. Arthur is to become one of the most famous men of his age, while George remains in hard-working obscurity., But as the new century begins, they are brought together by a sequence of events that made sensational headlines at the time as The Great Wyrley Outrages. This is a novel about low crime and high spirituality, guilt and innocence, identity, nationality and race. Most of all it is a profound and moving meditation on the fateful differences between what we believe, what we know and what we can prove.
Reviews: darkwood (Australia) (2007/09/09):
This book was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize of 2005. It puts me in mind of Tracy Chevalier's work in weaving stories around real people from the past. But this book is by far more accomplished in my opinion.
It concerns Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his involvement in a long forgotten legal case that made sensational headlines at the time as the Great Wyrley Outrages.
It brings to life the beliefs and wisdom of the time. We read of both Athur and George's childhood, and their widely differing personalities before Barnes launches into the story of the case. It covers marital fidelity, mysticism, naivety, faith, racial prejudice and much more with a writing style that is immensely readable, charming and compelling.

mccardey (Australia) (2008/07/03):
Shortlisted for the Man Booker 2005

From the cover:
"From the first paragraph we know ourselves to be in the hands of a major novelist... a compelling narrative, beautifully controlled. This novel is Barnes at this best."

The Arthur of the title is Arthur Conan Doyle and this is a real-life miscarriage of justice that he was intent on seeing remedied. It's very good reading.
