Amazon Review
Good news for investors. The days of paying exorbitant fees for information are gone. Technology is transforming the financial markets, sweeping away middle men and facilitating the free flow of information regardless of location or investing status. Written from the point of view that the majority of people are still daunted by the prospect of word-processing, The UK Guide to Online Investing is a useful primer on the subject of Internet personal finance. Published as a CD and book package, the text itself is actually more or less a companion to the real work which happens on your screen, walking through the online activities and gaining free launch access into cyberspace. There is good stuff here; on researching price movements, setting up an online portfolio, connecting to the best financial news sites and buying and selling shares. You can even open an account and check out commission rates through the CD/Internet launcher. Given that the sheer weight of information available is one of the greatest taxes on time today (apparently, it would take 4 years to explore all of the investment sites on the Web, given an hour's surfing a day), The UK Guide to Online Investing has a lot to offer. It takes a brave slice through the peripherals and although it doesn't do your homework for you, it does show you the sites where you can research yourself for free. If you want to know more about investing online and are serious about getting started, this is a great place to begin. It is one of the most accessible of the current crop and will soon have you exploring beyond the bounds of the book. --Iain Campbell
