Description: Product Description

When war erupts between England and America in 1812, it brings change and uncertainty—even to Michigan's remote Mackinac Island. For young Mary O'Shea, the hardest change is the departure of her father, who leaves Mackinac to join the American Army. With her sister and brother, Mary must tend the farm, deal with the hardships of British occupation, and hope for the safe return of their father.

Reviews: mb (USA: MI) (2009/07/01):
Enjoyable, realistic ya novel set before/during the War of 1812. The setting is Mackinac Island, a tourist paradise now, more of a hardscrabble fort and agricultural and trading beacon in years past. This story does a good job of representing the different cultures and political influences wafting through the area at the time (Indian, British, French/Canadian voyageurs etc). I stretch to draw resemblances to another favorite ya book of mine, 'The Witch of Blackbird Pond.' So think feisty heroine, pseudo-orphaned while father is away, supporting characters who support or try said heroine and her family (minus the supernatural accusations/suspicions).
