Reviews: Cherith (USA: KS) (2006/08/09):
It took me a while to get through The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. It's the language she uses. It's very evocative, very visual, and sometimes it's hard to just read through that type of language easily. Telling you what it's about would be giving somethings away. The story is told in such a backwards manner that past and future are all one piece of everything. The story goes back and forth to explain the present, and sometimes it's easy to get lost. The basics of the story is about two children, twins - Estha and Rahel, in India and their very odd family.

It was pretty hard to get past that first chapter, that first very long 80 page chapter where not a lot makes sense yet. However, I think once past that, the story's momentum had finally caught up with me, and I was able to feel more interested in what was going on. I think this book, goes in that very small list, next to A Confederacy of Dunces of books that I think I enjoyed, but I'll never be quite sure.

I will say that it was worth the effort of getting through the book for the writing style that Roy uses. There are moments, fragments that I think I might always remember. She writes like a poet, and the images she conjures up are hard to shake, even after finishing the story. Which I suppose is the best compliment I can give about this book.

Gently used good condition, with FAINT water stain on first few pages that does not interupt the text at all.

Rob (USA: PA) (2007/08/22):
One of my favorite books I've read in a long time. Arundhati has a way with words that I haven't run into before and a gifted way of weaving in and out of a story. Such an extraordinary first book from a first tiem author. Can't wait until she writes another one!

Marianne (Australia) (2007/12/28):
Powerful, moving, tragic. Beautifully written, wonderful word pictures. I had to read it twice, it was so good.

Rachel G. (USA: IN) (2008/01/03):
This book was required reading for my high school World Lit class, and I'm really glad I read it.

Although the book is confusing at times (jumping to the past and back to the present, as well as into the thoughts of different characters and their points of view) it is one of the best books I have every been required to read.

I like it so much I won't give up my copy, that's how good it is.

Amazing.

Lizzie and Tasha (United Kingdom) (2008/06/29):
Really great book, got me hooked after the first very confusing chapter (about which things are revealed throughout the book so you don't understand it properly until the end). Would definitely recommend.
