John (USA: CO) (2011/05/01): The Eighth Day is a resounding novel from an outstanding playwright. Wilder scope and vision from Our Town receives greater play in this human drama. Murder in Coaltown, Illinois, shakes two families to their core. That core is Wilder's primary interest. What makes us human? What does it mean to be human? The title comes from the idea that we are children of the eighth day of creation. Wilder himself described this book "as though Little Women was being mulled over by Dostoyevsky." This is a very apt description for a thorough and thoughtful American masterpiece. I highly recommend this book.
