ShB (USA: NJ) (2008/05/20): My whole book club gave up on reading this book. Even though I understood some of the cultural things better because of my background, I still found it grueling and only made it through the first 70 pages.

Diane Bird (USA: TN) (2008/09/23): I had a difficult time starting this book because of the unfamiliar Yiddish language, chess terminology, and the fictional setting in the Jewish Alaskan settlement. I almost gave up, but at a certain point I started to comprehend a little more just as the plot thickened, and I was hooked. The characters were very well written, and the story was fascinating to me. It was worth the effort.
