Jenny (Australia) (2007/12/01): This book was, I thought, pretty much as good as promised - I really liked Roy's use of language, it coloured both the character's thoughts and the scenes around them well. She treated each and every character with depth and dignity, even when you KNEW they were awful people. And there was a vague sense of quiet despair throughout, one I found stayed in my mind for a while even after I'd finished the story (and I guess that's a good thing for a book to achieve, yes?) The build-up of the story was probably the only thing that irritated me a bit, the jumping around from place to place was at times quite frustrating. But overall? Yeah, worth reading!
