Newbie Bookmoocher Thread : This is the place for new members to get info on Bookmooching

re: Member's email is not working

Leanne, are you the sender? If you have clicked the 'remind' button on these transactions, after some length of time (I want to say it's 2 weeks?) you will be able to mark them received from your end, without him needing to get involved. The tricky bit is that you can't click remind again, or the BM site will reset the clock for being able to force them received.

Also, keep in mind that you've already gotten the points when you clicked sent, so although the transaction is still on your pending page, your points are not on hold.

The BM wiki has more info on this process but I forget how to get there from here right now! Hope that helps.

re: can't access wishlist.

You might also try a different browser, in case it's an issue with how the browser's loading the page, and not just your internet connection.

re: requestee did not provide a last name ...

FYI, a last name or a full name is not needed for mail to arrive correctly in the US. In fact, my address on bookmooch has always just included my first name and last initial and I've never had problems receiving books. If lots of people receive mail at the same street address (private mailboxes, apartment building, etc.) there could be some confusion, but the post office doesn't care at all, as long as they know the correct street address (and optional suite/apartment/etc.) to deliver to.

re: specific editions

If you can't find the ISBN on amazon.com, try amazon.co.uk.

re: SMOOCH

Bob, a smooch is simply a way to send someone a Bookmooch point (to return a point, to say thank you, to give to charity, etc.). The charity function is essentially the same, it just lets you give more than one point at a time, whereas a smooch is only one point.

re: International mooches -- ok to accept some but not others?

For a long time I had my account set to 'ask first' and then indicated in my profile that I would send within North and South America but not overseas. Others have chosen to indicate which books are too heavy for them to send internationally, or overseas, in the condition notes. John has talked about setting up 'regions', so that someone could send just within Europe, say, or whatever. But until that happens I think you can approach it how you want, as long as you are clear and fair about it.

Back when the USPS still had international surface mail, there were some options, but now things can get mighty expensive especially for heavier books. Although $10 to Australia is pretty good - and considering you got 3 points for it it's not that much more expensive per point than a domestic mooch would have been. I have a vintage sewing book that someone in Australia wanted to buy (via a different site) and as far as I could tell the cheapest way to send it would cost $40. Ouch!

re: Hello to all members + some questions I have ...

Welcome to Bookmooch! I don't think there's a way to correct the "published in X language" info for a book - Bookmooch imports it from the Amazon book database so there's no way to fix it here. You could add some text in the 'condition' field indicating the correct language, and anything else you want to note.

If you are looking at someone's profile, it will say whether they ship internationally or not (there are three settings - in my country only, ask me first, and sends internationally). If a book is not available for you to mooch, you should not see it as available on your wishlist.

The save-for-later list can be viewed from your wishlist page, by choosing the pull-down menu and picking save-for-later list. (I think there are other ways too but that's the one I use most.)

I don't know the answers to the rest of your questions, so I will let someone else chime in on them. Hope this helps.

re: Lost Book

You can't change the book's status after it's marked lost, but you can send point(s) to the sender to give them points for sending you the book - simply use the 'smooch' function or 'give points to member' under the Charity category from your Bookmooch main page.

re: what should you list the value of a book on cutoms forms when shipping out of the country?

One thought, Cindy: the actual value of a used book is not whatever the original list price was - as soon as it's been sold and is 'used,' it is unlikely for you to be able to get anywhere near that price. If the book is an older one, it's probably not worth much of anything at all. (The same thing is true for used clothes, which is why writing off donations of your old wardrobe to charity on your taxes isn't as much of a help as you might think it would be, assuming the IRS feels like getting picky with you.)

I usually put $1 on the forms as a value of a book I'm sending overseas - I assume it's accurate for most used books anyway, and it's low enough to keep almost anyone from having to pay duties/customs.

re: Not To My County on books in my country

Were you by chance looking at the recently posted list? I've noticed that behavior as well. The site seems to pop up a new tab and treat you like you're not logged in (and thus doesn't know where you are geographically) but when you click onto another page you are logged back in and it knows where you are. I have no idea why it behaves that way but it's not just you.
